You might be struggling with addiction and need immediate medical help. However, you might not want to enter rehab as it requires you to miss out on work and school. Plus, you may have certain responsibilities to look after that you cannot manage while living in a rehab. Worry not! You can enroll in a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Wondering what it is?

Below, we have talked about PHP in detail.

What is a partial hospitalization program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a type of outpatient treatment program, only more structured. It is designed to treat various issues, including substance abuse disorder. You get invaluable support from therapists and psychiatrists to overcome your addiction as they develop the program based on your addiction and needs.

It includes therapy sessions that last from four to eight hours a day, up to five days a week. It means you commute to and from your treatment facility each day. Please note the treatment may continue for months, depending on the intensity of your addiction.

Who are PHP programs for?

A partial hospitalization program is for individuals struggling with addiction disorders or mental health conditions who need a higher level of care. If an outpatient treatment program has been ineffective, the PHP program may be used as an alternative. It may also be used as a ‘step-down’ option after you leave the rehab facility, as it helps you adjust to your life with added support.

What are the requirements for a PHP?

Although PHP is a voluntary treatment program, it demands a commitment to certain requirements. For instance, you may have to attend sessions every day for a few weeks. You must have a stable environment at your home with full support from your friends and family. PHP also needs full participation from the patient’s end to be effective.

What are the advantages of PHP?

Partial hospitalization programs may be beneficial for patients struggling with substance abuse disorders. The benefits include:

  • Comprehensive treatment program: PHP allows you to access therapy, addiction treatment, medication management, and other health services all in one place. The PHP center team works together to help you enter recovery and maintain sobriety.
  • Flexibility: Since you do not have to stay overnight at the PHP facility, you can attend school or continue with work. On the other hand, inpatient programs are more restrictive and do not allow you to participate in outside activities while you are in the program.
  • Lower costs: PHP is less costly than an inpatient treatment program as you do not stay at the facility 24 x7.
