Does Optum Behavioral Health Cover Drug Rehab in Georgia?

Hope Harbor Wellness is in-network with Optum Behavioral Health, the administrator that manages mental health and substance use benefits for UnitedHealthcare and a number of employer plans. Here is how Optum authorization, EAP sessions, and carve-outs work in Georgia.

Optum Behavioral Health · In-Network Yes. Hope Harbor Wellness is in-network with Optum Behavioral Health.

Optum is the network our contract runs through. If Optum administers your behavioral health benefit, you pay in-network rates with us for outpatient programs at our Hiram facility and for Virtual IOP anywhere in Georgia.

Adults 18 and older with commercial insurance. We are an outpatient provider only, and we do not accept Medicaid or Medicare.

What Optum Actually Is, and Which Plans It Administers

Optum is a health services company that administers behavioral health benefits on behalf of other insurers and employers rather than selling insurance directly. It absorbed United Behavioral Health, so plans that once said UBH now operate under the Optum name. Optum administers behavioral health for most UnitedHealthcare plans, for many UMR third-party administered plans, and for a range of self-funded employer groups whose medical coverage sits with a different carrier entirely.

Your Optum EAP May Cover the First Sessions

This is the piece most people never use. Many employer plans administered by Optum include an Employee Assistance Program with a set number of counseling sessions at no cost to you, separate from your medical benefit and not subject to your deductible. Those sessions can cover an assessment and the start of treatment before your medical benefit is touched. Ask us to check whether your plan includes one, because employers rarely advertise it well.

What Levels of Care Are Covered

All of the following are covered benefits under most Optum commercial plans when a licensed clinician documents that the level of care is medically necessary. Every client begins with a clinical assessment that determines which one fits.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

The highest level of outpatient care, with full-day clinical programming five days a week while you continue living at home. Often appropriate after detox, after a relapse, or when standard outpatient care has not been enough.

Learn More About PHP

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Structured group and individual therapy several days a week, scheduled so most people can keep working. IOP can be a step down from PHP or the right starting point on its own.

Learn More About IOP

Virtual IOP

The same IOP programming delivered through secure telehealth for clinically appropriate adults anywhere in Georgia. Useful when transportation, childcare, work schedules, or privacy make in-person attendance hard to sustain.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Suboxone or Vivitrol for opioid and alcohol use disorder, combined with therapy and clinical monitoring. MAT is built into the treatment plan rather than managed separately from your care.

Learn More About MAT

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Integrated care for addiction alongside depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and trauma-related symptoms, so connected problems are treated together rather than separately.

Detox Coordination

When medically supervised withdrawal is the right first step, we coordinate detox through a trusted partner and plan a direct transition into PHP, IOP, or MAT after stabilization.

What You Will Actually Pay

Being in-network sets the rate. What you owe against that rate comes down to five things, and we can tell you all five before you commit to treatment.

What it isHow it affects your cost
DeductibleWhat you pay before your plan starts sharing costs. If other medical care this year has already met it, treatment may cost far less than you expect.
Copay or coinsuranceYour share once the deductible is met, either a flat amount per session or a percentage of the allowed rate.
Out-of-pocket maximumThe ceiling on what you pay in a plan year. A full course of outpatient treatment often brings people to this ceiling, after which the plan covers the rest.
Prior authorizationApproval from the plan before a level of care begins. We request it during admissions and confirm the outcome before your first session.
Length of stayHow many weeks the plan authorizes at each level of care. This is reassessed as treatment progresses rather than fixed at the start.

Optum requires prior authorization for intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization on most plans, and it uses concurrent review to reassess medical necessity as treatment continues. We submit the initial request during admissions and manage the reviews throughout, keeping you informed of where each authorization stands.

Find Out What Your Plan Covers

We verify Optum benefits while you are on the phone and give you the numbers in writing. No cost and no obligation.

Who We Can and Cannot Treat

Being clear about this up front saves people a wasted phone call.

  • Adults 18 and older only.
  • Commercial insurance only. We do not accept Medicaid or Medicare.
  • Outpatient care only. We do not provide residential or overnight inpatient treatment, though we will help you find an appropriate referral if an assessment indicates you need it.
  • Detox comes first when it is needed. If medically supervised withdrawal is clinically indicated, we coordinate that before outpatient programming begins.
  • Virtual IOP is not right for everyone. A clinical assessment determines whether telehealth is appropriate for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Optum Coverage

Is Optum the same as United Behavioral Health?

Functionally yes. United Behavioral Health now operates under the Optum brand. A plan referencing either name points to the same behavioral health network.

My employer's medical plan is not UnitedHealthcare, but the card says Optum. Am I covered?

Very likely. Employers frequently carve behavioral health out to Optum while keeping medical coverage with another carrier. Our Optum contract covers you in that arrangement. Call us with the member ID and we will confirm.

Does Optum require prior authorization for IOP?

Usually yes, for both IOP and PHP. We request it during admissions and confirm approval before your first session, so nothing is denied after you have started.

I have a UnitedHealthcare card. Which page should I read?

Our UnitedHealthcare page covers plan types, cost sharing, and what to expect as a UHC member. This page covers the administration side. Both lead to the same in-network status with us.

How long does insurance verification take?

Usually the length of one phone call. We check your benefits while you are on the line and tell you your deductible status, expected cost share, and whether prior authorization is required.

What if I am not covered, or the cost is too high?

We offer CareCredit financing and private pay options. If neither works for your situation, we will point you toward Georgia resources that may fit better, including the state crisis line at 1-800-715-4225.
