Table of Contents

Young adults between 18 and 35 are the demographic most affected by substance use disorder in Georgia — and the demographic most likely to believe they are not affected enough to need treatment. If you are in your 20s or early 30s and your substance use is affecting your performance, your relationships, or your ability to control when and how much you use, that is worth taking seriously now — not after the consequences accumulate further.

Why Young Adult Addiction Is Different

The young adult brain is still developing — the prefrontal cortex, which governs impulse control, risk assessment, and long-term planning, is not fully mature until approximately age 25. This neurological reality explains why young adults are simultaneously more vulnerable to developing addiction and less likely to accurately perceive its severity and trajectory.

Young adult addiction also presents in specific contexts that require clinical familiarity: academic performance pressure and Adderall/stimulant misuse among college and graduate students; alcohol use disorder developing within the socially normalized heavy drinking culture of college and young professional environments; cannabis use disorder driven by daily use that began in high school or college; opioid use disorder that began with prescription misuse and transitioned to heroin or fentanyl; and party-context MDMA, cocaine, and ketamine use escalating toward problematic frequency and dependency.

Programs for Young Adults at Hope Harbor Wellness

Our Intensive Outpatient Program is particularly well-suited for young adults who need clinical structure alongside the ability to continue working, attending school, or managing other obligations. PHP provides more intensive structure for young adults who need it — appropriate for more severe presentations or following a period of residential or hospital-level care.

Our dual diagnosis programming is particularly relevant for young adults: ADHD, anxiety, depression, and early trauma are among the most common drivers of substance use in this age group, and treating the addiction without addressing these conditions produces much lower sustained recovery rates.

ADHD, Stimulant Misuse, and Young Adults

Adderall and Vyvanse misuse is widespread in the college and young professional population in the Metro Atlanta corridor — driven by academic pressure, performance anxiety, and the widespread availability of prescription stimulants in college environments. Our dual diagnosis evaluation specifically assesses for undiagnosed or undertreated ADHD, because for many young adults with Adderall dependency, appropriate non-stimulant ADHD treatment is the most important clinical intervention.

Confidentiality for Young Adults

Adults 18 and older are full HIPAA-protected clients. We do not share your information with parents, family members, school administrators, or employers without your written consent. Your treatment is confidential. You can pursue help without your parents knowing — this is a medical relationship between you and your clinical team.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m in college near Kennesaw or Canton — can I do IOP without missing school?

IOP scheduling can often be arranged to minimize conflict with class schedules. Virtual IOP is available as a fully telehealth option. Call 770-573-9546 and our admissions team will work through scheduling options with you.

I use Adderall I wasn’t prescribed — is that addiction?

Non-medical prescription stimulant use can produce physical and psychological dependency, particularly with regular use. If you find it difficult to function without it, have tried to reduce use and found it harder than expected, or are using at escalating doses — those are clinical signals worth a professional evaluation. We can assess this without judgment. Call 770-573-9546.

My parents want to pay for treatment — can they do that without being involved?

Financial arrangements can be made by a third party without that party being involved in your clinical care or receiving clinical information about you. Call 770-573-9546 and we will walk through the admissions options.
